The Suburban Monk - Who Loves Your Modern Lifestyle? This Guy.

Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life

- Prince, "Let's Go Crazy"

Chances are you could use a little levity in your life.

The weight of deadlines, bill payments, and chores to complete can seem too much at times.

In the search for happiness and inner peace, people often look to symbols and sayings to help them on their journey. The prevalence of modern prints with "Live. Laugh. Love." and Buddha statues goes to show that people are yearning for something more. After all, in this 24/7 age where we are tied to work and technology, it's important to be reminded of sheer joy and that life doesn't have to be so serious all the time.

While SYD can't help with the rent this month, he will be there as a prompt to lighten up and remember what's really important.

SYD, created and designed by The Suburban Monk Founder & CEO Ellen Atkins is a jolly fellow and bright spot in your day. He's a reminder to laugh, take a break, take the pressure off.

Atkins says she bought statues of smiling monks with big bellies because they made her laugh. "The Monks not only became my companions but my daily inspiration."

But alas, trying to find one that fit her desire to hold messages and other items (she initially used duct tape) was a lost cause, so she decided to design one and Syd the Suburban Monk was born.

Finally, a contemporary buddha for us modern folks!

A modern monk is challenging to find. Usually buddhas have a rustic quality thanks to materials such as dark wood or dull stone. Then you've got to try to find a happy one, because who wants to be greeted with a glum expression every day?

If you do happen to come across a chic one in say marble, mercury glass or gleaming metal, it not only weighs a ton, it costs a small fortune.

My decor reflects me - happy, minimalist, contempo - so I needed a happy monk to match. SYD is perfect. For many reasons, ten in fact:

1. He's a happy fella who's guaranteed to make you smile every time you see him.

2. At  just 2" x 2", he is lightweight and fits in anywhere, never overwhelming your space/decor, whether you've got him on your office desktop, bedside table or bathroom counter.

3. He is oh-so-smooth and shiny, so he looks as good as he feels.

4. Available in 14 colours, you can choose what works with your style. Blissful Bronze (pictured above) blends perfectly with my cool greys, mixed metals and glossy accents.

5. Each colour isn't just decorative - it's meaningful. The psychology of colour isn't just mumbo jumbo - each one influences how we feel and act. Take Victorious Purple, for example: It represents "enlightenment and combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. Purple represents royalty, wisdom, dignity, creativity, mystery, and magic for those who resonate with the colour. Purple is associated with the 7th chakra, which is the center of our Higher Self."

Every monk is accompanied by a colour card so you'll know what yours stands for (there's also a description of each on the website).

So while your friends remark on how cute SYD is -whether you're rocking him in indigo, ebony, raspberry, silver, red or any of the other nine shades - you'll know that power and possibilities that lie within.

6. This tiny statuette works within your budget (just $20 each).

7. Should you wish for more than one, there are colourful combos available as well as the complete set.

8. A percentage of all Suburban Monk sales goes to selected charities.

9. The Suburban Monk ships internationally. Woo woo!

10. Sometimes you just need a nudge to stop stressing, take a break and remember how much joy, love and laughter there is to be had (those "important" emails can wait). Syd is much more fun than a post-it note.

This little boo does all that and more - My bronze shorty doesn't just adds richness and warmth to my life. His golden hue is  ideal for "drawing in money and abundance." Happy New Year to me!
